Green Clay was born in Powhaton County, Virginia, and emigrated to Kentucky in 1777. A surveyor, he amassed a vast land estate, settling in Madison County. A Kentucky legislator and soldier, he served as major general in Kentucky Militia during the War of 1812. He raised the siege of Fort Meigs, Ohio, reinforcing the army of General William Henry Harrison. From the description of Green Clay letters received, 1808-1813 [microform]. (Ohio Historical Society).
